Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club, located in Leesburg Virginia, is one of the most popular public courses in Northern Virginia. The course was designed by Gary Player, the 1968 British Open champion and designer and architect of over one hundred golf courses around the globe. Raspberry Falls Golf Club was built on the fertile ground of what was once a raspberry farm. You’ll still see plenty of raspberry bushes during your round!
The first couple holes of the golf course are challenging. Number 1 is a long, uphill par four with a massive and magnetic bunker to the left of the green known as “Deep Cotton”. There are other greenside bunkers with names such as Lee’s Tomb, Satan’s Fox Hole and Hooker’s Wharf. Staying consistent with links style courses, the fairway bunkers are scary The second hole is also a difficult test of skill. With 428 yards from the back and 300 yards from the forward tees, it features a sloping hill with an out-of-bounds area 100 yards in front of the green.
One of the most visually appealing holes and my personal favorite is number 3. The views from the top of this tee box are beautiful and overlook the Catoctin Mountains and the Raspberry Falls neighborhood. The hole is long, but a significant drop in elevation allows it to be played much shorter.
Easily the most popular hole on the course is the 18th. It’s a 550 yard-long par five with another elevated tee box that provides gorgeous views. The Raspberry Falls creek runs along the left side for the majority of the fairway. The long and thin green is situated on the opposite side of the creek and plays at an almost 90 degree angle from the fairway. Getting on the green “in two” is almost impossible unless you can hook a 210 shot over the creek and a 10 foot deep bunker that protects the green. Good luck!!
The practice facility is outstanding for a public course and provides for “hitting off grass” on the weekends. There are very few public courses that offer a separate green for chipping, but Raspberry offers 100 yards of tightly mowed fairway grass to work on your short game. I would be remiss if I failed to mention the Raspberry Golf Academy which is a top rated golf school that offers in-door lessons and fittings.
After your round, enjoy your favorite beverage on the back porch of the clubhouse. The prices for food and drink are reasonable and the views of the 18th green are terrific.
If you’re looking for a gorgeous, challenging and fun golf course in Northern Virginia, Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club is an excellent choice.
